To keep up with the demands of his tumultuous adventures, Luffy, who aims to be the “Pirate King,” has undergone evolutionary changes in his abilities and honed his fighting techniques to battle powerful foes. However, the One Piece story progression lately hints that the resilient character still has to get even stronger to take down titans like the World Government.
One Piece Always Ties Luffy’s Abilities To the Story’s Developments, Which Indicates That He Will Be Getting Stronger
Luffy’s evolution in One Piece is closely knitted to the story’s ever-changing dynamics. To tackle new challenges, the character elevates the intensity of his abilities. The pattern is clearly visible throughout the story. For instance, Gear 2 was a counter to the CP9 group in the Enies Lobby Arc; it was the first glimpse into the intricacies of Luffy’s Devil Fruit.
In the same arc, Gear 3, a more advanced application of Luffy’s Devil Fruit, allowed him to inflate his bones to gargantuan sizes, increasing his destructive power. At the time of Gear 4's debut, Luffy already had a solid grasp of Haki, a mysterious power exerted only by a few. The Haki-Devil Fruit combination birthed Gear 4.
These recurring factors all point to a One Piece universal truth: Luffy’s ability grows as the story expands, and his Mythical Zoan fruit, Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, which was revealed in his clash against Kaido through Gear 5, may play a factor in Luffy’s power growth. Although Luffy has achieved several accomplishments by defeating Kaido and Kizaru, he is still no match for the World Government.
It has been hinted on different pivotal occasions that the World Government (Gorosei) and Imu, the leader of this totalitarian group, are behind multiple tyrannical actions ranging from slavery to mindless killing. Consequently, the One Piece saga is setting up for a clash between the Straw Hats and the World Government, two contrasting entities.
While it's possible that Luffy can contend with the Gorosei, he is currently no match for Imu. Rocks D. Xebec, who was the strongest pirate of his era, was defeated by Imu. This ascertains Luffy’s inability to defeat Imu without an additional growth in his abilities, and Gear 6 might just be the answer.
Gear 5 Is Powerful, But It’s Not Enough
Luffy’s Devil Fruit, Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, which was formerly known as the Gomu Gomu no Mi, is among a long list of controversies surrounding the World Government. The Fruit's true ability debuted in the Wano Arc in Luffy’s clash against Kaido with Gear 5.
Gear 5 is the manifestation of Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. The ability is remarkably powerful; it works in tandem with Luffy’s imagination and his iconoclastic nature. The previous Gears were focused on Luffy manipulating his body to achieve different results. Essentially, they stemmed from Luffy. On the contrary, Gear 5 works on a grander scale.
With Gear 5, Luffy can manipulate his surroundings with only his imagination, acting as a limiter. The acquisition of this Toon-force-like ability allows Luffy to bend the laws of physics, increasing his attack power tremendously.
Gear 5 is powerful, but it’s still lacking in comparison to Imu. One way Luffy can enhance the potency of the ability is by furthering his Haki training; however, a dramatic spike in Haki control is a bit underwhelming considering Oda’s choices for power-ups so far.
Oda is well-known for his avant-garde approach to power systems, and what better way to crown the pinnacle of Luffy’s strength than with Gear 6? Oda continues to marvel viewers throughout the series, unfurling controversies and power evolutions fans couldn’t predict. Based on the creator’s proclivities, Gear 6 will be the greatest evolution fans would ever see.
Gear 6 Would Be The Perfect Climax for Luffy as a Character
The One Piece story is nearing its final saga, but there are still many unanswered questions the series needs to address. The nature of the “One Piece” treasure hasn’t been revealed, the Will of D is shrouded in mystery, and Imu hasn’t made any final moves. With these events in mind, One Piece still has a few more arcs to run through before sealing the story.
Consequently, due to the presence of numerous plot gaps in the adventure series, there’s still a solid chance Luffy will be entering the next gear, literally. Gear 6 might receive a lot of backlash if it doesn’t live up to One Piece’s golden standard because it would be challenging for Oda to pull off another marvellous feat that outshines Gear 5.
This perspective can be given credence as Luffy commented, "I can do everything I wanted to do!” after reaching Gear 5, hinting that there may be no subsequent upgrades to the Devil Fruit. However, regardless of the possible downsides, if executed properly, Gear 6 would be the ideal zenith for Luffy, the liberating leader of the Straw Hats.
